Escherichia coli disease

(1) Clinical symptoms

1. Omphalitis type in chicks
This disease is commonly known as "big belly button". Most sick chickens die within 1 week. They are depressed and weak, often huddled together, eat little or no food; their abdomens are swollen, the navel and the skin around it are red, edematous or blue-black, with a pungent odor, the egg yolk is not absorbed or poorly absorbed, they have severe diarrhea, and the feces are grayish white and mixed with blood
2. Ophthalmitis type
Sick chickens are depressed, close their eyes and shrink their heads, eat less, drink more water, and excrete greenish-white feces; ophthalmitis is mostly unilateral, and a few are bilateral; the eyelids are swollen, there is inflammatory cheesy material in the conjunctiva, the eye chamber is hydropic and the cornea is turbid, they tear, are afraid of light, and in severe cases, the eyeballs atrophy, sink, and become blind, and eventually die of exhaustion. It often occurs at the same time as septicemic Escherichia coli disease. The swollen head and face symptoms currently seen in laying hens are related to the eye inflammation type.
3. Inflammatory type of the reproductive system

The body temperature of sick chickens rises, the comb shrinks or turns purple, and the feathers become fluffy; the appetite decreases and quickly disappears, and they like to drink a small amount of water, have diarrhea, and have soft and watery feces that are light yellow or yellow-white. The feces are mixed with mucus or blood, and often contaminate the feathers around the anus; the egg production rate is low, the egg production peak cannot be reached or the egg production peak is maintained for a short time, the abdomen is significantly enlarged and drooping, sensitive to touch and fluctuating, and the mortality rate of the flock increases.

4. Septicemic type
It is common in white-feathered broilers, with a high mortality rate. The earliest case is seen in 3-day-old chicks, with typical septicemic symptoms. Chickens of all ages and breeds can be infected, with an incidence rate of 5% to 30%, and a large difference in mortality rate: it is closely related to the presence or absence of mixed infection with other pathogens. Currently, bronchitis, bronchitis, black heart and lung in broilers are often related to septicemic E. coli disease. Sick chickens have difficulty breathing, depression, ruffled feathers, loss of appetite or loss of appetite, severe diarrhea, white or yellow-green feces, swollen abdomen, short course of disease, and die quickly.
(2) Pathological changes
.Chicken or young chicken
The liver is enlarged, brick red or yellowish, with small grayish white or light yellow necrotic spots scattered on the surface, and the liver sometimes has hemorrhagic spots or streaks. The umbilicus and its surroundings bleed, the yolk is absorbed slowly or not absorbed, and the contents are mostly yellow-green paste or cream, and the yolk may even harden into a cheese-like substance (this is similar to omphalitis-type Escherichia coli disease, which is difficult to distinguish through meat). In the early stage, there is a light yellow turbid liquid on the surface of the lungs. In the middle and late stages, there are grayish white to grayish yellow nodules in the lungs (encephalitis-type white diarrhea). The heart is deformed, and there are white or grayish white raised necrotic nodules in the heart, intestines, gizzards, etc. (young chickens). The intestinal wall is diffusely granulomatous, and the cecum is filled with cheese-like substances, which are sausage-like, forming the so-called first core (similar cecal cores can also appear in enteritis-type Escherichia coli disease, fowl typhoid, avian paratyphoid, histomoniasis, etc.), sometimes mixed with blood (young chickens)
Congestion of the meninges: enlarged gallbladder: enlarged spleen with white necrotic spots: slightly enlarged kidneys, congested ureters dilated due to filling with urate.
2. The liver of adult chickens is swollen and degenerated, yellow-green, with an uneven surface and thickened liver capsule. Ascites, fibrinous pericarditis, white or grayish white nodules in the myocardium, small necrotic spots in the pancreas, etc. The follicles are degenerated and discolored, and become cystic. The contents of the follicles are greasy or cheesy. The yolk ruptures and falls into the abdominal cavity to form yolk peritonitis, and causes adhesions of the intestines to other internal organs, etc.
